Who we are

We are a roofing company covering Blackpool and roughly fifteen miles around it — the Fylde coast from Fleetwood down to Lytham St Annes, and inland through Poulton-le-Fylde, Kirkham and out towards Garstang. We work on repairs, re-roofing, flat roofs, leadwork and rainwater goods, on domestic property and on the multi-let and commercial buildings that make up so much of this town.

We are a service-area business. There is no shop counter and no showroom, which keeps our overheads down and means the phone is the way to reach us. If we are on a roof when you ring, leave a message and we will call back.

How we work

• We look before we quote. Including inside the roof space where it matters. A price given from the pavement is a guess.
• The price is written and fixed. You get it before anything starts, so there is nothing to argue about at the end.
• We say when a repair will do. A call-out is not a sales visit for a new roof. If a repair buys you several more years, that is what we will recommend.
• We say when it will not. If a slope keeps failing, we will tell you that a repair is buying months rather than years, and let you decide with the facts.
• We deal with the permissions. Conservation area, Article 4, building regulations — we tell you what applies before you commit, not after the scaffold is up.
• Everything is guaranteed in writing. A 20 year full written company guarantee on all workmanship and all materials, issued as a document.

Why we go on about local building types

Because Blackpool is genuinely unusual, and a roofer who treats it as a generic English town will get things wrong here.

A great deal of the inner stock is three and four storey brick boarding houses built between the 1860s and 1911, originally roofed in Welsh slate. Blackpool Council’s own townscape studies record that a large proportion of them later had that pitched roof cut off and a flat-roofed extra storey built in its place as the holiday trade declined — the council calls these roof lifts. So on thousands of local buildings the main weathering surface is a flat roof ten to fourteen metres up, with the original slate surviving only on the rear or the outshut. That is not a detail. It changes what the job is.

The wider area is just as varied. The Raikes area, mostly built between 1900 and 1932, has blue slate and red tiles side by side. Inter-war Layton has hipped roofs in red terracotta tile on Accrington pressed red brick. Fleetwood, laid out by Decimus Burton in the 1830s and 40s, is Welsh blue-grey slate in gabled forms with red clay tile common too, and mansards with ornamental iron cresting on the grander buildings. Poulton-le-Fylde is overwhelmingly late Victorian and Edwardian in Welsh grey slate and cast iron guttering. Marton Moss was thatched, then corrugated iron. Garstang, inland, counted 130 thatched roofs against 78 slated in an 1840 survey and has no thatch left in the town centre at all.

Knowing which of those you are standing in front of decides the covering, the fixing spec, the leadwork and whether you need permission. We would rather spend ten minutes on that at the quote than get it wrong on the day.

Wind, not rain

One more thing we will keep saying because it is true and almost every roofing website gets it backwards. Blackpool is drier than the UK average — Met Office long-term figures for Blackpool Squires Gate give about 886 mm of rain a year against a UK average of about 1,163 mm — and sunnier, at about 1,592 hours against about 1,403. What sets this coast apart is wind: mean wind of about 10.7 knots against a UK average of about 9.3, and five to ten gale days a year on the North West coast against fewer than five inland.

Roofs here fail by uplift, by loosened fixings and by blocked drainage. That is why we care about mechanical fixing and edge detail more than we care about telling you it rains a lot.

What we will not tell you

We would rather be short of claims than make them up. You will not find a founding year, a team headcount, an accreditation logo or a customer count on this site unless it is real and we can back it. You will not find roof lifespans, percentages of local housing stock, corrosion ratings or a distance at which sea salt stops mattering, because no authority publishes those for this coast and every version of them you see quoted elsewhere is invented.

What we will give you is a written price, a written guarantee, and an honest account of what is wrong with your roof.
